Crossing the River

The children row the boat across the river.  One of them gets off the boat, and the other rows back.  Then the child who is left on the boat gets off, and the mother rows across.

The boat is now on the opposite side of the river to where they started.  So the child who is on this side then rows the boat back to pick up the other one, and then both children cross together.
