Slow Race

A cycling club announces one week that the following week a race would be held.

However, for some strange reason only two members turn up to compete.  The organiser of the race decides to change the rules, so that the rider whose bike comes second will win the prize.

Both competitors started off right away, but for fear of coming first, each rider soon slowed down until the race came to a standstill.

Eventually they had an idea on how they could continue the race so that one of them would win.  What did they do?
