You and nine others are to take part in a challenge. The ten of you will be placed in a line, all facing in the same direction along the line. Each of you will then have either a green hat or a purple hat put on your head, sight unseen. The challenge is for as many members of the group as possible to work out the colour of the hats they have been given.
Starting from the back, each member in turn must attempt to state the colour of his/her own hat. Nobody may look the other way, and no communication is allowed other than the answer of “green” or “purple” that is given in turn.
Fortunately, this is all explained to you and the group has an opportunity to get together and discuss a strategy before the challenge starts. So, what strategy are you going to plan so that nine out of ten correctly state their own hat colours?
Find the word that fits after the first word and before the second to make a compound word or phrase. (Example: life JACKET potato, as in life-jacket, jacket potato.)
Fill the grid with the numbers from 1 to 9, such that each number appears exactly once in each row, each column and each of the nine 3×3 blocks.
